Early Life and Football Career

Charles attended Port Arthur Memorial High School in Port Arthur, Texas, where he played football and ran track. He was considered a four-star recruit by Rivals.com and committed to the University of Texas to play college football.

College Career

Charles played for the Texas Longhorns from 2005 to 2007. As a freshman, he rushed for 1,228 yards and 12 touchdowns. In his sophomore season, he led the team with 1,612 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns. Charles was named a first-team All-American in 2007 after rushing for 1,543 yards and 16 touchdowns.

NFL Career

Charles was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the third round (70th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft. He quickly became a key player in the Chiefs' offense, leading the team in rushing in 2009 and 2010. Charles was named to the Pro Bowl four times (2009, 2010, 2012, and 2013) and was a second-team All-Pro selection in 2009 and 2010.

In 2015, Charles suffered a season-ending ACL injury in Week 2. He returned to the Chiefs in 2016, but he was not the same player he was before the injury. Charles was released by the Chiefs in 2017 and signed with the Denver Broncos. He played one season with the Broncos before retiring in 2018.

Retirement

Charles announced his retirement from football on February 23, 2019. He signed a one-day contract with the Chiefs on April 26, 2019, to retire as a member of the team.
